Verdi, sempre Verdi, fortissimamente Verdi
The fourth Solo Belcanto Festival is dedicated to the musician who, as his great interpreter Riccardo Muti has written, represents more than any other, Italy’s roots: “He is a composer so capable of stripping bare and dealing with our passions and our sorrows, our virtues and our defects, that we recognise ourselves in him, and this is one of the reasons for his universality. For as long as humankind remains as such, with the features we recognise today, every generation will find in the music of Verdi a comforting word”.
It is on the two fundamental Verdian muses, Giuseppina Strepponi and Teresa Stolz, that the concerts will focus, with protagonists Eunhee Kim and Chiara Mogini, accompanied at the piano by Michele D’Elia and Fabio Maggio respectively, while the closing concert of the Festival, entrusted to Nicola Alaimo and Gianni Fabbrini, will be dedicated to the Verdi baritone par excellence, Felice Varesi. We could not do without a homage to one of the most extraordinary voices to come out of Siena and its environs, that of the bass Giulio Neri, master interpreter of many of Verdi’s characters: to Giacomo Prestia and Michele D’Elia is given the task of re-evoking his image.
One of the novelties of the Solo Belcanto 2017 programme is the presence, in all concerts, of some new talents with promising futures: Leon Kim, Giada Frasconi, Ana Victória Pitts. Remember these names: you will be hearing a lot more from them.
Maria Costanza Nocentini will present the traditional master class reserved for young singers, who will be performing at Montisi and Castelmuzio, one of the beautiful small towns in the immediate vicinity. The pianist Fabio Maggio will assist at the master class.
Our thanks go to all these singers and pianists who, as they do every year, have made themselves available to participate in Solo Belcanto with their usual generosity. Some of them are coming to Montisi for the first time, and we hope that they, like the others who come back with enthusiasm, will also return, as proof of the evocative beauty of the place, the warmth of the reception and the gastronomic delights of the many food and wine specialities of the area.
Tickets for the Festival are already on sale on Eventbrite. From this year it will also be possible to purchase a season ticket for 2 or 4 concerts, with a saving of up to 20% on the price of a single ticket.
On our site you can also find the information necessary to arrive comfortably in Montisi and details of accommodation in the towns and villages nearby.
Obviously we are relaunching our crowdfunding initiative, the collective financing on the GoFundMe platform through which we invite you to support Solo Belcanto: in three years we have raised almost €20 000 which has been indispensable in bringing into being a cultural project of which we are as proud as those who promoted it.
As I always say “Gutta cavat lapidem”, “Dripping water eventually wears away stone”.
Make a date for the end of August. See you in beautiful Montisi!
